By Belize Live News Staff: After video footage showing a police officer threatening a transport officer went viral, the Public Service Union (PSU) has demanded strong action to ensure accountability and restore public trust.
The footage, captured on the Phillip Goldson Highway, shows the officer — believed to be intoxicated and out of uniform — verbally abusing a transport official. The incident sparked outrage, with many calling for immediate disciplinary measures.
Commissioner Chester Williams confirmed that the officer, a corporal from Hattieville, will face criminal charges for aggravated assault, based on newly amended laws that protect public officers from threats and violence while on duty. In addition to the criminal charges, an internal investigation is underway through the Professional Standards Branch.
The officer has been served a notice of complaint and, once formally charged, will be placed on interdiction pending the case’s outcome. The PSU continues to call for impartial handling of the matter to set a precedent for officer accountability.
