El Salvador declared one of safest countries for U.S. travelers—Can Belize get there too?

By Belize Live News Staff: El Salvador, once known for gang violence and high murder rates, has now been ranked safer than France and the United Kingdom for U.S. travelers. The U.S. State Department this week upgraded the country to Level 1 — its highest travel safety rating — joining a short list of countries where Americans are advised to “exercise normal precautions.”

The move has stunned many in the region and left Belizeans wondering: if El Salvador can do it, why can’t we?

President Nayib Bukele’s aggressive anti-gang strategy has reduced crime so significantly that the U.S. now considers the country a safer destination than many in Europe. For Belize, where crime concerns still affect both local life and international tourism, the comparison is striking.

While Belize offers natural beauty, world-class attractions, and warm hospitality, it continues to be held back by safety concerns in certain areas. If Belize wants to improve its international image and truly thrive as a top tourism destination, we must take bold steps toward better policing, faster justice, and long-term crime reduction strategies.

El Salvador’s success shows that change is possible. The only question now is: does Belize have the will to make it happen?
