Belize confirms 33 cases of New World Screwworm, Toledo worst affected

By Belize Live News: A total of 33 cases of New World Screwworm have been confirmed across Belize, affecting various livestock and pets. The Toledo District is the hardest hit, with 27 cases, while other cases have surfaced in Cayo (4), Belize (1), and Orange Walk (1). The Ministry of Agriculture and BAHA are now ramping up control measures to prevent further spread of the disease.

Farmers and pet owners are being urged to inspect their animals regularly, treat wounds with approved products, and report any suspected cases immediately. Officials warn that the movement of livestock is being strictly monitored, with checkpoints in Sandhill, Bullet Tree Falls, and Jalacte. Only animals with the necessary inspection certificates will be allowed to travel.

The government is also cracking down on illegal animal importation, stating that only animals approved by BAHA can legally enter the country. Violators could face hefty fines of up to $5,000 or imprisonment for up to three years under the New World Screwworm Prevention, Control, and Eradication Regulations.

Officials continue to monitor the situation closely, urging the public to remain vigilant and report any suspected cases to BAHA at 302-1388 (Orange Walk), 824-4872 (Central Farm), or via WhatsApp at 670-7003.
