By Belize Live News Staff: Two women were shot and injured in a targeted attack on Tuesday evening, prompting a police investigation into the attempted murder.
The incident occurred around 6:30 p.m. near the corner of Sarstoon Street and Vernon Street. Police responded to reports of gunfire and were informed that the victims had already been transported to Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital (KHMH) for emergency treatment.
The injured women were identified as 40-year-old Stephany James of Vernon Street and 55-year-old Maria Cruz of Sitee Street. They had been walking with 42-year-old Kenroy Martin when a gunman opened fire.
Martin told police that as they passed Berger Football Field, he noticed a dark-skinned man in a red shirt standing near the football field fence. Moments later, the man drew a firearm and fired several shots in their direction.
Both women suffered gunshot wounds but remain in stable condition, police said.
Crime scene personnel processed and photographed the scene, recovering several expended shell casings. Investigators are reviewing nearby surveillance footage to gather evidence on the shooter.
Authorities have not yet identified a suspect and are asking anyone with information to come forward. The investigation is ongoing.
