By Belize Live News Staff: The Christian Workers Union (CWU) is demanding answers from the Social Security Board (SSB) following the sudden and unexplained departure of its CEO, Dr. Leroy Almendarez. The CEO’s exit, which occurred six days ago, has raised concerns over transparency and due process within the organization.
According to the CWU, the SSB has failed to provide a credible explanation as to why Almendarez, who had only served five months in a three-year contract, was abruptly removed. The union alleges that SSB did not follow proper procedures when it appointed both a CEO and a Deputy CEO, raising legal concerns. They further claim that when the issue was brought up, the Board disregarded their concerns, despite existing legislation only allowing for an Assistant CEO.
The CWU also highlighted that Almendarez had gained support and respect from SSB staff, particularly for addressing job security concerns. The union is now calling on the Board to act transparently and provide a clear explanation to reassure both SSB employees and Belizeans that this decision was made in the best interest of the institution.
As concerns grow over the financial and operational impact of this leadership shake-up, the CWU insists that the SSB must justify the cost and consequences of this move.
The situation remains unresolved, and the union has warned that it will continue pressing for answers.
This is a developing story. Stay tuned for further updates.
