Canadian man caught trying to steal boat and cross into Belize

By Belize Live News Staff: Authorities have detained a Canadian man after he attempted to steal a boat from a fishing pier in Chetumal Bay on Sunday morning. The suspect, whose identity has not yet been disclosed, allegedly intended to cross into Belize before being intercepted by Navy personnel and handed over to municipal police.

The incident occurred on January 26 when the man took a boat from the dock. The boat’s owners and a dock guard immediately alerted emergency services, triggering a swift response. Navy personnel stationed nearby quickly moved to intercept the suspect, who, upon realizing he was cornered, jumped into the bay in an attempt to evade capture.

The man was eventually apprehended at the dock by municipal police and transported to the State Attorney General’s Office (FGE) for further investigation.

According to reports, the individual, who only speaks English, appeared to be under the influence of alcohol or drugs at the time of the incident. Authorities are still investigating his motives for attempting to steal the boat and cross into Belize. The suspect’s identity remains unconfirmed as inquiries continue.
