Officer accused of machete attack on dog sparks national outcry

By Belize Live News Staff: A shocking case of animal cruelty involving a police officer has reignited calls for greater accountability within Belize’s law enforcement. Officer Mauricio Wright is at the center of the controversy, facing charges after a video surfaced allegedly showing him striking a dog tied to a tree with a machete.

The incident, captured on video and widely circulated, depicts the dog being hit multiple times by the officer. The footage was submitted to authorities by a local humane society, leading to an official complaint and swift action by the police.

Commissioner of Police Chester Williams addressed the matter, highlighting the importance of clear evidence in pursuing such cases. “I think I saw the video footage where the dog was tied to a tree in a yard, and the officer went at the dog with a machete and whipped him about three times. That video was sent to the humane society, and they made a complaint. Based on that complaint, the police acted and charged the officer for that matter,” said Williams.

The case has drawn public attention, with many applauding the police department’s willingness to hold one of its own accountable. Williams further assured the public that evidence would guide the department’s actions in future cases of animal cruelty. “If there is evidence to substantiate the charge, certainly yes, that is going to be the trend,” he said.

As the investigation unfolds, the Belize Police Department faces increased scrutiny, with Commissioner Williams reiterating the importance of transparency and accountability in addressing such allegations.
