Commissioner Williams criticizes officer’s conduct in theft case

By Belize Live News Staff: A Belize City police officer is facing suspension and possible dismissal after being caught on camera allegedly stealing $550 from a cash drawer while on duty. PC Peter Graham, who was assigned to special duty at J&Y Block Factory on Mahogany Street on January 6, was charged with theft after the incident went viral on social media over the weekend.

Surveillance footage showed Graham allegedly going behind the desk and taking money from the cash drawer. The business owner discovered the missing funds after Graham had left, prompting immediate reporting to the police. The case has cast a shadow over the Belize Police Department, raising concerns about integrity within its ranks.

Commissioner of Police Chester Williams did not hold back his criticism of the officer, calling his actions “disgusting” and emphasizing the breach of trust involved. He stated:
“We are police officers. We are charged with the trust and confidence of the public. His conduct in that video goes against the grain of what being a police officer is. As much as the public may be outraged, the law requires that we follow due process… but believe you me, what I saw on that video footage is unforgivable.”

Graham has been suspended and is expected to respond to a letter regarding his potential dismissal. The Commissioner made it clear that Graham’s continued employment hinges on his explanation, but he is prepared to act decisively if justified.

This is not the first controversy surrounding Graham. In 2018, he was detained in connection with a drug plane landing in Barranco. While no charges were filed, the incident left lingering questions about his conduct.

Graham appeared in court and was granted bail of $1,500. He is scheduled to return to court on March 13.
