David Hodge named as new US Charge d’Affaires to Belize

By Belize Live News Staff: The United States Embassy in Belmopan is set to welcome a new Charge d’Affaires as David Hodge steps in to succeed US Ambassador Michelle Kwan. A seasoned diplomat with three decades of experience, Hodge is expected to officially assume his new role next week.

Hodge brings a wealth of international experience to the position, having served in diverse roles, including US Consul General in Sao Paulo, Brazil, and Cultural Attaché. His diplomatic career has also taken him to key postings across Latin America and beyond, including Panama, Thailand, Peru, and Argentina. Notably, he served as Deputy Chief of Mission in Guatemala, further solidifying his expertise in the region.

Ambassador Michelle Kwan, who has held the post in Belize since October 2022, will conclude her term on January 16. Her tenure coincides with the upcoming inauguration of the US President for a new term. During her 27 months in Belize, Kwan, a celebrated Olympic figure, made her mark as a cultural ambassador and advocate for bilateral collaboration.

This leadership transition marks a continuation of US-Belize relations, a dynamic that has seen 14 US ambassadors stationed in the country since its independence. The last five years also saw Belize receiving Charge d’Affaires leadership during key periods.

As David Hodge prepares to take on this role, the focus will likely remain on fostering robust diplomatic ties and advancing mutual priorities. While it remains unclear when a permanent ambassador will be appointed, Hodge’s expertise promises to bring continued engagement and cooperation between the two nations.
