By Belize Live News Staff: Police have launched an investigation into the murder of 59-year-old caretaker Godfrey Winfield Hyde, whose body was discovered on Turneffe Island on Saturday. This marks the first homicide case for 2025 in Belize.
Responding to reports of a body found on the island, investigators, along with Coast Guard personnel, arrived at a camp where they found Hyde’s lifeless body on the veranda of a small wooden bungalow. The Belize City resident had sustained two gunshot wounds.
The discovery was made earlier in the day by a fisherman who had arrived at the camp to deliver supplies to Hyde. Shocked by the scene, the fisherman immediately contacted the Coast Guard stationed nearby, who in turn notified the police.
A single expended shell was recovered from the crime scene, and investigators are working to establish a motive for the killing. At this time, no suspects have been detained.
Police are urging anyone with information about the incident to come forward as they continue their search for answers in this tragic case.
