By Belize Live News Staff: A robbery in Buttonwood Bay took an unexpected turn when a licensed gun holder defended himself, shooting 19-year-old Cameron Myles in the shoulder. The teenager, who had attempted to rob a store with a rusty .38 revolver, was arrested after receiving medical treatment and pleaded guilty in court on Monday.
Myles faced charges of attempted robbery and possession of an unlicensed firearm. Initially facing a mandatory minimum sentence of five years, the court handed down a reduced sentence of two years and seven months after considering Myles’ clean criminal record and remorseful plea.
During the sentencing hearing, the defense highlighted Myles’ young age and first-offender status. The court ultimately considered these factors as mitigating circumstances.
Authorities continue to urge youth to steer away from criminal paths and seek positive alternatives.
