By Belize Live News Staff: A Belize police corporal narrowly avoided injury after her home was targeted in a pre-dawn shooting in Saint Matthew Village on Friday, authorities said.
Yelena Monterroza, 33, a corporal in the Belize Police Department, reported hearing five gunshots at approximately 2:55 a.m., followed by a brief pause and then three more shots. Monterroza told police she looked outside her windows but did not see anyone and immediately contacted the Roaring Creek Police Station for assistance.
Investigators processed the scene, discovering significant damage. A grey Ford F-150 parked nearby had its rear window shattered and five bullet holes in the trunk. A brown Toyota Tacoma sustained damage to both passenger-side windows, a punctured rear tire, and seven bullet holes. A bullet also pierced a glass window near the main entrance of the corporal’s concrete bungalow.
Police recovered 29 expended shells from the scene, including 16 Aguila REM 223 shells, three RP REM 223 shells, and 10 Aguila .45 Auto shells. Despite extensive searches in the area, no suspects have been identified, officials said.
