By Belize Live News Staff: A night of travel turned tragic on the George Price Highway as two separate but related traffic incidents resulted in one fatality and several injuries.
The first accident occurred around 8:45 p.m. between mile 25 and 26 when a grey Kia Soul SUV overturned several times after its driver, Kelvin Reneau, reportedly lost control. Reneau, a 49-year-old assistant manager from Old Belize, was traveling with two passengers, Aliyah Tores and Aaisha Williams. All three suffered head and body injuries and were being transported by ambulance when a second accident occurred.
As police processed the scene of the overturned SUV, a red Chevrolet Equinox with three occupants—Joshua Magana, Miriam Cordon, and Angel Pastrana—had stopped nearby. A white Ford Econoline van, driven by Leroy Nunez, collided into the rear of the stationary Equinox. The occupants of the Equinox sustained varying degrees of injuries, with Miriam Cordon tragically succumbing to her injuries en route to Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital.
Authorities detained Nunez at the scene and have since charged him with several offenses, including manslaughter by negligence and driving under the influence. The incident has raised concerns over road safety and the dangers of impaired driving.
Investigations into the dual accidents continue as police urge drivers to exercise caution and adhere to traffic laws.
