By Belize Live News Staff: UDP Senator Michael Peyrefitte has raised concerns over the proposed four-month appointment of Maria Rodriguez as Acting Auditor General, suggesting it coincides with rumors of the upcoming general elections. The position has remained vacant since the contract of former Auditor General Dorothy Bradley was not renewed.
Peyrefitte criticized the government’s proposal, arguing that appointing an acting Auditor General for a limited term does little to ensure continuity or accountability in such a critical role. He pointed out that if the position remains unfilled after the term, Belize would again face the challenge of operating without an Auditor General.
The government, however, maintains that the temporary appointment would allow for key administrative processes to continue while efforts to find a permanent replacement are underway. They argue that even a short-term solution is better than leaving the role vacant.
Peyrefitte questioned the timing and rationale behind the proposal, implying political motivations. He stressed the need for a long-term appointment, suggesting that the government should prioritize hiring someone who can provide stability and ensure public trust in financial oversight.
