Man jailed after defending sister in alleged domestic dispute

By Belize Live News Staff: A domestic dispute in Hattieville has taken a dramatic turn, resulting in the arrest of 23-year-old Brett Mejia, who now faces two counts of attempted murder. The incident began when 24-year-old Kenroy Lanza allegedly attacked his sister, leading Mejia to intervene. The confrontation escalated, with Lanza being stabbed during the altercation.

In court, Mejia was remanded to prison until January 6, 2025, as no plea was taken. His sister, who spoke anonymously, detailed the chaotic sequence of events, claiming that Lanza had been drinking and became violent, grabbing her and threatening her with a knife and machete. She insisted that her brother’s actions were in self-defense as he tried to protect her and their mother.

Despite their efforts to report the incident, the sister claimed that police dismissed their complaint. “We have no justice to what’s happening,” she said, expressing frustration over her brother’s arrest.

Lanza remains hospitalized, while the family plans to seek legal assistance to fight the charges against Mejia.
