Belizean firefighter breaks barriers, becomes nation's first paramedic

By Belize Live News Staff: A Belize City firefighter has made history by becoming the country’s first qualified paramedic. Roberto Riverol, 33, recently completed an intensive training program in the United States, acquiring advanced life-saving skills previously unavailable in Belize.

Riverol’s journey began in 2016 when he joined the fire service, seeking a more stable career after the birth of his child. His dedication and aptitude for the work soon became evident, leading him to pursue further training opportunities. This included programs with Hanover Fire-EMS in Virginia, where he specialized in firefighting, hazardous materials, and pre-hospital care.

In 2020, Riverol was instrumental in bringing US-donated ambulances and equipment to Belize through the US Embassy’s CARSI grant program. This initiative aimed to integrate EMS into the fire service, enhancing emergency medical response, particularly in rural communities.

Driven to further advance his skills, Riverol completed an accelerated paramedic program in the US, mastering advanced techniques such as Pediatric Advanced Life Support, Advanced Cardiovascular Support, and Pharmacology. He then successfully passed the US National Registry exam for Paramedics, solidifying his qualifications.

“This is a significant step forward for emergency medical care in Belize,” Riverol stated. He emphasized the potential to provide a higher level of care to citizens through advanced interventions like medication administration, cardiac therapy, and advanced airway management.

Riverol is scheduled to return to Belize in November, where he will play a crucial role in training fellow firefighters in EMS and expanding the program into other districts. His achievement marks a milestone in Belize’s emergency medical services, paving the way for improved pre-hospital care nationwide.
