Belize-Guatemala border tensions discussed during US official’s visit

By Belize Live News Staff: During his visit to Belize, US Assistant Secretary of State Brian Nichols addressed growing tensions along the Sarstoon River, a disputed border area between Belize and Guatemala. Nichols flew over the area during his trip and emphasized the importance of peaceful dialogue and legal resolution through international courts.

Nichols noted that both Belize and Guatemala have shown positive engagement in addressing the border issue. “We’re encouraged by the constructive approach of leaders on both sides, and we are confident that both nations will continue working towards a peaceful resolution, respecting the legal processes already in place,” he said. While he stopped short of detailing any direct US involvement in the mediation process, Nichols emphasized that the US is ready to play a supporting role if necessary.
