Belizean Ambassador takes the helm at OAS, vows to tackle poverty

By Belize Live News Staff: Ambassador Lynn Raymond Young, Belize’s Permanent Representative to the Organization of American States (OAS), has taken over as Chair of the OAS Permanent Council. Young, who will hold the position until the end of 2024, has made it clear that tackling poverty and promoting inclusive economic growth will be his top priorities.

During the handover ceremony at OAS headquarters in Washington D.C., Young emphasized the need for strategies that empower vulnerable communities, improve access to healthcare and education, and create decent job opportunities. He reiterated Belize’s strong commitment to the fundamental principles of the OAS: democracy, human rights, security, and development, and pledged to uphold these values throughout his chairmanship.

Outgoing Chair, Ambassador Victor Fernandes of Barbados, expressed his confidence in Young’s leadership. The OAS also announced that US Ambassador Francisco Mora will serve as Vice Chair for the next three months.

The Chair and Vice Chair positions of the Permanent Council rotate alphabetically among member states every three months.
