Barbados pioneers sargassum-powered vehicle, revolutionizing renewable energy

By Belize Live News Staff: Barbados etched its name in the annals of renewable energy history this week with the successful launch of the world’s first vehicle running on renewable natural gas derived from an unconventional mix – Sargassum seaweed, Blackbelly sheep manure, and rum distillery wastewater.

It was a moment of triumph after more than a year of dedicated research and development, spearheaded by Dr. Legena Henry and her team at the University of the West Indies at Cave Hill. The project, a collaborative effort between Rum and Sargassum Incorporated and Supernova Lab of Future Barbados, has attracted over a million dollars in investment and culminated in the unveiling of “Test Drive Zero” earlier this week.

The event, held at Guinea Plantation, showcased not only the Sargassum-powered vehicle but also the potential of this renewable gas to revolutionize various sectors. From powering cooking appliances to generating electricity, and even fueling conventional vehicles retrofitted for bio-CNG, the possibilities seem endless.

Dr. Henry, visibly excited about the breakthrough, highlighted the economic and environmental benefits. “This bio-CNG is a game-changer,” she explained. “It offers Barbadians a chance to cut their fuel bills in half while significantly reducing our carbon footprint.” She also emphasized the potential to address the island’s Sargassum seaweed problem, turning a nuisance into a valuable resource.

With plans for a network of eco-stations across the island, Barbados is steering towards a greener future. This innovation underscores the island’s commitment to becoming fossil-fuel-free by 2030 and serves as an inspiration for sustainable solutions worldwide.
