Ministry of Education tackles teacher shortage with licensing push

By Belize Live News Staff: Amidst a pressing teacher shortage in the Belize District, the Ministry of Education is expediting the issuance of teaching licenses to fill critical gaps in classrooms.

Several schools have struggled to find enough qualified educators, a situation attributed to a combination of insufficient teacher numbers in the district and delays in license renewals. Last month, the ministry indicated that around 3% of teachers had not yet submitted their renewal applications.

Education Minister Francis Fonseca provided an update this week, stating that of the 2,300+ licenses up for renewal, over 2,022 had been approved as of a week ago, with an additional 100+ approved in recent days.

“Our objective is never to reject licenses or to take teachers out of the classroom,” Fonseca emphasized, “but we have to follow the process to ensure teachers are qualified.” He noted that around 54 applications are currently pending due to missing information.

The ministry is collaborating with the Belize National Teachers Union (BNTU) to address these outstanding cases and expedite the licensing process. Recent meetings between the ministry and the BNTU have focused on resolving broader issues within the education sector, including the teacher shortage.
