NTUCB condemns government’s hospital relocation decision

By Belize Live News Staff: Tensions are escalating over the government’s decision to relocate the University Hospital project from the University of Belize (UB) campus. The National Trade Union Congress of Belize (NTUCB), which holds a seat on the UB Board, has formally objected to the move in a letter to Board Chairman Godfrey Smith.

The NTUCB’s letter criticizes the government’s decision to purchase 15 acres of land for the $90 million hospital, stating that it was made “without meaningful consultation with key stakeholders.” NTUCB Chairman Luke Martinez expressed “deep disappointment” with the development, claiming it undermines good governance and raises concerns about transparency and accountability.

The union has called for an urgent board meeting to address the issue and urged the board to “take a proactive stance in holding the government accountable.” The letter concludes by emphasizing the importance of examining the implications of the government’s actions and ensuring they align with the principles of good governance and public accountability.

This development adds to the growing pushback against the government’s handling of the hospital project, further highlighting the controversy surrounding the decision to relocate the facility.
