CARICOM Heads of Government deeply concerned about crime and violence in the region

By Belize Live News Staff: In a statement released on Tuesday, the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) expressed deep concern over the escalating levels of crime and violence within the region. The statement cites firearms and ammunition trafficking, transnational criminal networks, and the deterioration of social structures as contributing factors to this alarming trend.

CARICOM leaders emphasized their commitment to taking urgent action to protect citizens and ensure public safety. This includes sharing information, strengthening legislation related to firearms offenses and violent crimes, and addressing bail concerns. The statement also highlights the importance of restorative justice, social and cultural interventions, and combating corruption as essential components of a long-term solution.

The regional body pledged to strengthen and utilize existing mechanisms and institutions, such as the CARICOM IMPACS Regional Intelligence Fusion Centre, to address crime and security. Additionally, CARICOM will explore new approaches to combat high levels of criminality.

CARICOM acknowledged the significance of the April 2023 Regional Symposium on Crime and Security as a Public Health Issue held in Trinidad and Tobago. The organization welcomed Barbados’ offer to host a second symposium before the end of 2024.

Recognizing that crime and violence affect everyone, CARICOM called upon all citizens to actively participate in finding solutions. This includes reporting crimes and refusing to support criminal activity.

The statement concludes by emphasizing the importance of ongoing regional and national collaboration to address the multifaceted challenges posed by crime and violence in modern Caribbean society.
