Retired public officers protest at Belize Finance Ministry over unmet benefit claims

By Belize Live News Staff: Executive members of the Association of Beneficiaries and Retired Public Officers (ABRPO) conducted a picket at the Ministry of Finance building in Belmopan on Tuesday. The protest aimed to highlight grievances over unmet commitments concerning the Public Sector Workers Trust.

This action follows a previous protest on March 21, which led to a meeting on June 4 with Prime Minister John Briceño and other officials. During this meeting, activities and timelines for the dissolution of the Trust were discussed, with an agreement to hold monthly reviews. However, nearly two months have passed with no further meetings, despite reminders sent to the Office of the Prime Minister and the Minister of the Public Service.

ABRPO President Hubert Enriquez expressed the group’s frustration, noting that many aging beneficiaries are passing away without receiving their entitled benefits, causing concerns about the inheritance of these benefits by their families.

Beneficiaries are calling on Prime Minister Briceño to fulfill his commitment to dissolve the Public Sector Workers Trust and ensure that deserving beneficiaries receive their compensation promptly.

The ABRPO continues to advocate for the rights and benefits of retired public officers, emphasizing the need for government accountability and timely action.
