Internal conflict erupts as Faber calls for Shyne Barrow’s ouster

By Belize Live News Staff: In a recent and unexpected turn of events, Patrick Faber, former leader of the United Democratic Party (UDP), has taken to Facebook to voice his strong opposition to the current party leadership. His public outcry against Shyne Barrow, the current UDP leader, has sparked controversy and highlighted ongoing internal conflicts within the party.

In his post, Faber did not mince words: “I do not support dictatorship and censorship! If I’m unable to say how I feel in the party’s internal structures, I’ll say it here loud and clear! I don’t support the dictator, convicted criminal leader of the UDP and he must go,” Faber declared. This bold statement has amplified the rift within the UDP, which has been simmering since the party’s significant loss in the recent Toledo by-elections.

The call for change by some within the party’s hierarchy underscores the heightened dissension and the challenges facing the UDP. However, any shift in leadership appears unlikely. The National Convention voted unanimously to reelect Shyne Barrow on August 13, 2023, and resolved that no further Leadership Conventions would be held until after the next General Elections. This decision solidifies Barrow’s leadership position and highlights the majority support he enjoys among the Standard Bearers.

Despite Faber’s strong stance and public criticism, the party’s rules and recent resolutions make a leadership change via a recall mechanism virtually impossible. The National Convention’s decisions have reinforced Barrow’s leadership, emphasizing stability and continuity within the party ranks.

The question now is whether Faber will face sanctions for violating the recent resolution prohibiting negative public statements against the party. The UDP’s response to this internal challenge remains to be seen, but this development undoubtedly marks a pivotal moment in Belizean politics.

As the UDP grapples with these internal conflicts, the implications for the party’s unity and its strategy heading into the next general elections are significant. With the general elections approaching, the party must navigate these challenges carefully to present a united front to the electorate.
