By Belize Live News Staff: Tropic Air CEO Max Greif says the airline is financially secure and does not face threats to its operations from external creditors, even as discussions continue over the Government’s proposed relocation of San Pedro’s domestic airport.
During an interview with 7News, Greif responded to questions about whether the airline’s opposition to relocating the airport was influenced by financial interests connected to valuable property near the existing runway.
Greif rejected suggestions that the company’s financial position could be compromised by the proposed move.
“From a financial perspective, I would say Tropic has never been in a stronger financial position,” he said.
He also stated that Tropic Air’s assets are not pledged to external creditors in a manner that would threaten the company’s ability to operate.
Greif maintained that his concerns are primarily about the consequences for Ambergris Caye’s economy and the airline’s 270 employees.
He explained that San Pedro has developed around its existing airport for decades, making the facility an important part of the island’s tourism and commercial infrastructure.
According to Greif, relocating the airport far north could disrupt established travel patterns and affect businesses throughout San Pedro.
He argued that the discussion should focus on the wider implications for residents, tourism operators and small businesses rather than Tropic Air alone.
The proposed airport relocation remains a subject of concern for the airline, with Greif calling attention to the potential economic consequences for the island.
