By Belize Live News Staff: Prime Minister John Briceño is keeping his options open on whether Belize would permit foreign troops to operate within its borders as the government explores participation in the United States’ Shield of the Americas security initiative.
The Prime Minister confirmed that he recently discussed the initiative with the US Ambassador and an American military colonel.
He has since requested that senior Belizean security officials meet with their American counterparts to determine what form of cooperation would be practical.
Those officials include the CEO for National Security, the BDF Commandant and the Coast Guard Admiral.
The proposed cooperation comes as Belize seeks additional resources to confront the threat posed by international drug trafficking organizations.
Briceño acknowledged that Belize needs assistance, particularly in obtaining better equipment, intelligence and specialized training.
The Shield of the Americas, launched by US President Donald Trump in March, is designed to strengthen regional cooperation against drug cartels and transnational criminal organizations.
Its proposed activities include greater intelligence sharing, law enforcement coordination and potential military cooperation.
But the question of whether foreign military personnel could be stationed or deployed in Belize remains unresolved.
Asked whether Belize would allow foreign troops on its territory, Briceño said technical discussions must take place before he can provide an answer.
“Let the technical people speak first and then after that I’ll be able to answer you,” the Prime Minister stated.
No final agreement or commitment to host foreign troops has been announced.
