By Belize Live News Staff: Toledo residents could soon learn whether they will keep a domestic air link to the rest of the country.
Prime Minister John Briceño says Maya Island Air is exploring the possibility of flying to Punta Gorda, as Tropic Air prepares to end its service there at the start of November.
Briceño said the Government cannot force Tropic Air, a private company, to keep operating a route that is losing money. But he said Maya Island Air has shown interest, and talks are underway.
He expects the airline’s CEO to present terms within a week.
The loss of Tropic Air service has raised concern across the south. Former PG Mayor Ashton McKenzie, Opposition Leader Tracy Panton and the Belize Tourism Industry Association have all warned it could hurt tourism, businesses and residents who depend on air travel.
McKenzie had specifically suggested engaging Maya Island Air as one possible solution.
The news comes the same week the Government celebrated securing Belize’s first direct air service from Europe, raising questions from some Toledo residents about whether domestic connectivity is getting the same attention.
