By Belize Live News Staff: The Ministry of Natural Resources, Petroleum, and Mining has issued a flood forecast and alerts effective from 1:00 PM on Monday. Residents across various regions of Belize have been advised to prepare for potential flooding. A flood alert is in effect for the northern portion of the Corozal District, particularly the Ranchito Area. Flooding is possible, and residents should be prepared.
A flood warning is in effect for the Sibun River at Freetown Sibun, and for the Rio Grande and Moho Rivers in the southern parts of the country. On the Rio Hondo, above-normal water levels are expected at Blue Creek North, Santa Cruz, San Roman, San Antonio, and Douglas downstream to the coast. The New River is also expected to see above-normal levels at Tower Hill and Caledonia.
In Region 9, normal levels are anticipated on the Mopan River at Benque Viejo Town. Reservoir levels at all FORTIS facilities on the Macal River are expected to remain below the spillway; at San Ignacio, levels should stay below the low-level bridge. The Belize River at Double Run is expected to maintain normal levels, while water levels on the Crooked Tree Lagoon are decreasing and are expected to remain below the causeway.
Residents in Freetown Sibun and southern Belize should exercise caution as flood stage levels continue. At Freetown Sibun, flood stage levels are expected to decrease minimally. Increasing levels are anticipated to continue at Gales Point Village in the Southern Lagoon. Steady levels are expected in the watersheds on the eastern slopes of the Mayan Mountains. Above-normal levels are expected at Kendal Bridge on the Sittee River.
The Swasey and Bladen branches of the Monkey River are expected to see above-normal levels, which should gradually decrease. Normal levels are expected on the Deep River at Medina Bank. On the Rio Grande, levels have exceeded bankfull stage at San Pedro Columbia and are expected to continue; flood stage levels are also expected to continue at Big Falls South. Flood stage levels are anticipated to continue on the Moho River at Blue Creek South and Jordan. Above-normal levels are expected on the Temash River at Crique Sarco.
In Region 13, above-normal levels are expected on the Sarstoon River. The Ministry urges residents to stay informed and take necessary precautions. The next update will be issued on Tuesday, July 23.
