By Belize Live News Staff: Every year, the world’s top economic decision makers meet twice: once in the spring and again at the Annual Meetings in the fall. This week, that gathering is in Bangkok, and Prime Minister John Briceño is attending.
For small economies like Belize, the meetings are an important opportunity.
They offer a chance to meet with the IMF and World Bank, development partners and investors, and to put Belize’s priorities on the global agenda. Discussions often cover economic growth, debt, financial stability, climate resilience and access to development financing, issues that directly affect small island and coastal nations.
The meetings also come at a key moment for Belize. The country recently exited the EU tax grey list, and the US State Department’s latest Investment Climate Statement noted continued economic growth alongside challenges including public debt and the need for stronger governance.
Belize’s economy grew for a fifth straight year in 2025, but recent trade figures show imports at record highs and exports in decline.
The Annual Meetings run until October 18, when the Prime Minister is expected back home.
Deputy Prime Minister Cordel Hyde is holding over as Prime Minister in the meantime.
