By Belize Live News Staff: The organization representing Belize’s house movers is calling for a thorough investigation into the crash that killed Sergeant Jovanni Ponce.
The Belize Home Movers Group says it has worked with the Department of Transport to develop and support improved safety standards for transporting houses. Those include bright amber strobe lights on all four corners of a house and powerful white floodlights illuminating its front.
The measures are meant to make oversized loads clearly visible to oncoming drivers, especially at night.
Based on the information available, the group says it has serious concerns that these measures were not adequately followed in this case. It said that, if confirmed, it would be a deeply disappointing failure to uphold the industry’s safety standards.
The group is urging authorities to examine compliance with all lighting, escort and transport permit requirements, while recognizing that the investigation must establish the full facts and causes of the collision.
Sgt. Ponce was killed around 10:07pm on Saturday when his Chevrolet Equinox struck the corner of a zinc house on a Ford F350 flatbed. His wife and a child travelling with him survived without major injuries.
The driver of the truck was served a Notice of Intended Prosecution. Police investigations continue.
