By Belize Live News Staff: Isaias has grown into a hurricane over the Gulf of Mexico, but Belize is not expected to feel its direct effects.
The National Meteorological Service reports that at 6:00am, the hurricane was located about 175 miles north northwest of Progreso, Mexico, near latitude 23.7 North and longitude 90.6 West.
Isaias was heading east northeast at 9 mph, with maximum sustained winds reaching 80 mph.
Just a day earlier, the system was a tropical storm with winds of 40 mph. It has since doubled in strength as it moves across the Gulf.
Forecasters say there is no direct threat to Belize, but residents should continue to monitor official updates.
Here at home, moist and unstable conditions persist. Skies will be sunny with cloudy intervals today, with isolated showers and thunderstorms. The west could see a few storms develop this afternoon.
Similar conditions are expected Thursday night and Friday.
