By Belize Live News Staff: Belize Electricity Limited’s smart meter rollout is moving across the country, and tens of thousands of homes are already connected.
BEL began installing its Smart AMI meters in the second half of 2025. The first areas to receive them were Belize City, San Pedro and Placencia.
Crews are now working in Ladyville, the Belize River Valley, Belmopan and nearby villages, as well as Independence.
In late August, BEL Chairman Lynn Young said roughly 45,000 of the company’s 117,000 customers had been switched over to the new meters. That is nearly 40 percent of BEL’s customer base.
The meters measure electricity use electronically and transmit the data directly to BEL, reducing the need for manual readings.
This week, BEL also showed the media how customers can use the meters themselves. Energy Audit Officer Ezar Pol explained how homeowners can check their consumption as it happens, helping them understand where their electricity is going.
For many households, that could be the key to figuring out which appliances are pushing their bills higher.
BEL has not yet announced when the rollout will reach the rest of the country.
