By Belize Live News Staff: The National Meteorological Service has issued a strong thunderstorm warning for northern and central coastal areas of the country this Saturday morning.
Forecasters say strong thunderstorms are affecting those areas with dangerous lightning, heavy rain and possible gusty winds.
Residents are urged to be on alert for potential flooding, especially in low lying areas. People are also being advised to avoid standing near tall objects, such as trees and poles, that could attract lightning.
Motorists in affected areas should drive with extreme care, as heavy rain can reduce visibility and make roads slippery.
According to the Met Service, moist and unstable conditions are prevailing over the area. A few showers, thunderstorms and periods of light rain will likely affect mainly central and northern coastal areas this morning before gradually decreasing.
The break may not last long. Forecasters say a few showers and thunderstorms could redevelop mostly over inland areas this afternoon. By tonight, the activity is expected to shift mainly to coastal and southern areas.
Out at sea, conditions are choppy to rough. Winds are blowing from the east to southeast at 5 to 15 knots, with waves of 3 to 7 feet. Small craft operators and fishers are advised to use caution.
The good news is that there is no tropical threat. Tropical cyclone formation is not expected over the region during the next 48 hours.
Today’s forecast was issued by forecaster Tareek Matthews.
