Panton: Toledo’s air connectivity must be a national priority

By Belize Live News Staff: Opposition Leader Tracy Panton says Tropic Air’s decision to close its Punta Gorda station is deeply concerning and requires urgent Government action.

The airline has announced that the station will close on November 1, 2026.

Panton says the closure will affect residents, workers, businesses and tourism partners who depend on reliable air service to southern Belize.

Tropic Air has cited sustained operating losses and uncertainty surrounding proposed changes to domestic aviation infrastructure. Panton says that raises urgent questions about the Government’s plans for the sector and Toledo’s future connectivity.

She acknowledged that airlines must make commercially responsible decisions as operating costs rise. But she said the Government has a responsibility to support sustainable air service, protect affordability and advance equitable national development.

“Toledo is integral to Belize’s future. Its people deserve reliable connectivity and a concrete plan that protects access to opportunity,” Panton wrote.
