Prime Minister John Briceño is keeping his cards close to his chest. Speaking to the media on Monday, he said his decision on the substantive police portfolio will be discussed with Cabinet before it is made public.
He did not say when that will happen. He did not say whether Julius Espat stays.
That silence has put Espat’s future squarely in the spotlight.
The police portfolio is no small assignment. The minister oversees the Belize Police Department and is expected to lead the fight against crime while keeping communities safe. It is a job that demands strong leadership and quick decisions.
For Espat, the coming Cabinet discussion could either lock him in or open the door for a new face at the ministry.
For Belizeans, the wait continues.
One thing is clear from the Prime Minister’s comments. This will not be a surprise announcement from the podium. Cabinet will have its say first, and only then will the country find out who will lead the police ministry going forward.
