Slinger Francisco, known around the world as the Mighty Sparrow, died peacefully in New York on Sunday at the age of 91 following a brief illness, according to his family.
For generations of Caribbean people, Sparrow was more than a singer.
His songs became part of the region’s soundtrack, mixing humour, politics, social commentary, relationships and everyday life in a way that made calypso both entertaining and deeply connected to the times.
With a powerful voice, clever songwriting and a commanding stage presence, Sparrow built a career that stretched across decades and helped take Trinidad and Tobago’s calypso tradition to audiences around the world.
His influence was felt far beyond his homeland.
Across the Caribbean, including Belize, his music became familiar to listeners who grew up with calypso as part of the region’s shared cultural identity.
His family said Sparrow was surrounded by loved ones when he died and remembered him not only as a legendary entertainer, but as a husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, life partner and friend.
They also said that in his final days he embraced Christianity and was baptised into the Seventh-day Adventist faith.
Sparrow leaves behind an enormous musical legacy and generations of performers influenced by his style, wit and fearless storytelling.
His passing closes a remarkable chapter in Caribbean music history.
The songs remain, the influence remains, and for countless Caribbean fans, the Mighty Sparrow will remain one of calypso’s most unforgettable voices.
