By Belize Live News Staff: Belize’s Foreign Ministry has issued a strong warning following preliminary reports of a Guatemalan military aircraft being present in Belizean airspace without authorization.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed Thursday that it had received reports concerning the aircraft but stopped short of declaring that an incursion had been conclusively established.
Instead, the Ministry said it is working alongside the Ministry of National Defence and Border Security to determine exactly what happened.
The Government made clear, however, how it would regard a confirmed unauthorized entry by a foreign military aircraft.
According to the Ministry, any such incursion into Belizean airspace would constitute a violation of the country’s sovereignty and would be countered appropriately.
The statement did not disclose the reported location of the aircraft, its flight path or whether Belizean security forces encountered or responded directly to it.
The reported incident is particularly significant because Belize and Guatemala continue to have an unresolved territorial dispute before the International Court of Justice. Belize has maintained that protecting its sovereignty and territorial integrity is a major foreign policy priority.
For now, the Government’s account remains based on preliminary reports, with official confirmation of the circumstances still pending.
