By Belize Live News Staff: The Ministry responsible for Religious Affairs says children should never be placed in situations where inappropriate sexual behaviour is encouraged or presented as entertainment.
The Ministry issued the statement following concerns raised by churches about what it described as inappropriate and sexualized behaviour involving children during recent public celebrations.
According to the Ministry, such conduct is inconsistent with the dignity, moral values and standards of responsibility that should guide the protection of Belizean children.
The statement did not identify a specific event or provide details about the incidents that prompted the concerns.
The Ministry acknowledged the importance of national and cultural celebrations as expressions of Belizean identity and heritage, but said cultural expression must not compromise the protection of children or appropriate boundaries.
It also recognized the role of churches in promoting strong families, human dignity and child protection.
Parents, guardians, event organizers, participants and members of the public are being urged to exercise greater vigilance whenever children participate in public celebrations.
The Ministry said the safety, dignity and best interests of every child must remain paramount.
