By Belize Live News Staff: Leader of the Opposition Tracy Taegar Panton is calling for constitutional reform, campaign finance reform and stronger accountability for elected leaders as Belize marks 45 years of Independence.
Panton used her Independence Day address to argue that strengthening public institutions should form an important part of the country’s next chapter.
She said Belize must reexamine laws and structures that concentrate power in elected officials and provide broad discretion over important national decisions.
“No member of the Executive should operate without meaningful oversight,” Panton said in her prepared remarks.
The Opposition Leader also called for transparency and restraint in the management of public finances, arguing that borrowed money should advance clearly defined national priorities and deliver measurable benefits to Belizeans.
Panton later called for constitutional reform informed by Belize’s 45 years of experience as an independent nation, along with campaign finance reform and greater accountability for political leaders and members of Parliament.
She argued that democracy should remain focused on ideas and public service rather than political influence.
Panton also addressed the role of the Opposition, saying it has a responsibility to remain vigilant and constructive, hold the Government accountable and contribute to national debate while earning public trust through service and integrity.
She called on citizens to become more actively involved in Belize’s democracy by registering to vote, questioning representatives, mentoring young people, supporting Belizean businesses, protecting public property and rejecting bribery and wrongdoing.
Panton said Belize at 45 should represent a movement larger than any political leader or institution, driven by an engaged citizenry and adherence to the rule of law.
