Solar mini grids and batteries to bring electricity to thousands of rural Belizeans

By Belize Live News Staff: Thousands of Belizeans living in rural communities could soon gain access to electricity through a major new investment combining traditional grid expansion with solar power and battery storage.

The Inter American Development Bank has approved a US$23.75 million financing package for Belize’s Rural Electrification Program, which is expected to provide electricity for the first time to approximately 3,000 households.

Instead of relying exclusively on extending existing power lines, the programme will use several technologies depending on the needs of individual communities.

Solar photovoltaic mini grids equipped with battery energy storage systems will be installed, while smart meters will help with electricity monitoring and management. The existing distribution network will also be expanded where appropriate.

The initiative is designed to reach underserved rural communities, including those with significant Indigenous and migrant populations.

Beyond household electricity, the IDB says the programme is intended to promote economic opportunities by encouraging productive uses of power in rural areas.

Reliable electricity could potentially support small businesses and community services that previously faced limitations because of inadequate access to power.

The programme was approved on September 16 and is now listed by the IDB as being in implementation.

The financing includes US$20 million in loan funding and US$3.75 million in nonreimbursable resources.
