By Belize Live News Staff: The People’s United Party has officially launched its municipal campaign in Belmopan, endorsing Mayor Pablo Cawich and six councillor candidates ahead of the March 2027 elections.
The endorsement convention was held on Friday, September 18, with Prime Minister John Briceño, PUP Chairman Henry Usher, Belmopan Area Representative Oscar Mira and other party officials in attendance.
Cawich will lead a slate consisting of Florita Botes, Coretta Banner, Lawrence Tush, Sannie Cal, Radin Santos and Christopher Enriquez.
The mayor enters the campaign as the incumbent after first winning the post in March 2024. Official election results show Cawich received 3,127 votes and the PUP won every seat on the Belmopan City Council.
Briceño urged supporters to remain united as the party prepares for the municipal campaign.
During his remarks, the Prime Minister also turned attention to San Ignacio and Santa Elena, where the UDP has retained the mayoral position in recent municipal elections. Briceño said the sitting mayor was “not a bad person,” but argued that he was in the wrong political party and had been there too long without enough to show for it.
The remark signals that the PUP is placing political attention on the twin towns heading into the next municipal contest. In the 2024 election, the UDP retained the mayoral post in San Ignacio and Santa Elena while the PUP won Belmopan.
The Belmopan gathering also included mayors from several municipalities and concluded with entertainment from Super Furia Band.’
