By Belize Live News Staff: Belize Telemedia Limited is not framing the arrival of Starlink as a battle between traditional internet providers and satellite technology.
Instead, BTL CEO Ivan Tesucum says the two services can complement each other in Belize’s telecommunications market.
In an interview with 7 News Belize, Tesucum said BTL has invested heavily in terrestrial fibre infrastructure, with more than 2,000 miles of fibre distributed throughout the country.
He also said the company’s network passes more than 100,000 homes.
Tesucum contrasted BTL’s fibre infrastructure with Starlink’s satellite based system, arguing that fibre remains a major advantage for delivering internet service directly to customers.
“There is nothing faster than fiber,” Tesucum told 7 News Belize while explaining why the company does not see Starlink as direct competition.
Tesucum also pointed to BTL’s pricing, saying the company believes its services remain affordable.
The comments provide insight into how Belize’s largest established telecommunications company is responding to the growing availability of satellite based internet technology.
Rather than treating Starlink solely as a threat, BTL management is presenting satellite connectivity as another part of Belize’s expanding telecommunications landscape.
