Police conviction rate reaches 80 percent as major drug seizures continue

By Belize Live News Staff: BELMOPAN, Belize, September 15, 2026: Prime Minister John Briceño says the Belize Police Department has achieved a record conviction rate of 80 percent while strengthening its interdiction capabilities and expanding surveillance.

During the national security section of his State of the Nation Address, Briceño said Government has recently acquired 15 vehicles for the Police Department and installed surveillance cameras at strategic locations.

He also highlighted drug seizures recorded since the beginning of the year.

According to figures presented by the Prime Minister, police have seized 1,372 kilograms of cannabis and 582 kilograms of cocaine, along with quantities of methamphetamine, hashish, crack cocaine and heroin.

Briceño said the seizures demonstrate Government’s determination to deter drug cartel activity and reduce the violence, addiction and insecurity associated with the illegal drug trade.

He described citizen security as a core responsibility of Government and said the administration intends to continue strengthening police capacity across the country.
