By Belize Live News Staff: Opposition Leader Tracy Taegar Panton says Guatemalan billboards reportedly placed in Belize City have crossed a line and should be removed immediately.
Panton said the signs have triggered anger among Belizeans and described their presence in the old capital as deeply insensitive and unacceptable.
She rejected any suggestion that the billboards should be treated as ordinary tourism promotion.
Instead, she argued that they carry political implications at a time when Belize continues to defend its territorial position and sovereignty.
Panton said the Government has a duty to protect Belize’s national identity before public outrage forces a response.
She called on authorities to disclose who approved the billboards and explain how they were permitted to enter the country and be erected.
The UDP leader said the controversy is particularly troubling in the context of the latest Sarstoon incident and Belize’s upcoming Independence celebrations.
She urged Prime Minister John Briceño to address what she described as both subtle and direct threats to Belize’s sovereignty in his State of the Nation Address.
Panton said Belize must respond with firmness, diplomatic clarity and public accountability.
“Our sovereignty is sacred. Our territorial integrity is non negotiable,” she said.
