By Belize Live News Staff: Police are investigating the deaths of a young couple who were found inside their home in Santa Elena, Cayo, on Monday morning.
The deceased have been identified as 31 year old Michael Williams and 21 year old Delisha Estrada.
According to reports, the couple was discovered at around 10:00 a.m. inside their residence located in front of Hillview Park. Their bodies were reportedly in an advanced state of decomposition.
The young child shared by the couple was not at the home at the time and was staying with a relative.
At this stage, police have not confirmed what caused the deaths.
Investigators remained at the scene for several hours before the bodies were removed at around 5:15 p.m. Forensic personnel were seen entering the residence in protective gear as they processed the scene.
Relatives of both victims waited outside for hours as police carried out their investigation. The scene became emotional, with one family member reportedly fainting.
San Ignacio and Santa Elena Mayor Earl Trapp said he knew both victims and described them as respectful, motivated and enthusiastic young people.
Trapp also said the incident has added to concerns about safety in the twin towns and revealed that he recently spoke with the Commissioner of Police about the need for additional support in the area.
The mayor said he was assured that extra police resources have been deployed.
Post mortem examinations are expected to be conducted in the Belize District as investigators work to determine how the couple died.
