By Belize Live News Staff: Sunday morning brought another power outage, this time hitting the Philip Goldson International Airport area at 9:52am after a series of BEL fluctuations earlier in the morning.
The part that matters is what did not happen.
Air traffic control never went dark. Backup generators for the Radar Room and the Control Tower kicked in immediately, both running independently of the airport concession company’s systems.
Radar stayed up. Communications stayed up. Tower operations stayed up.
No arriving or departing aircraft experienced delays. The BDCA and COCESNA Belize generators also held until BEL restored service, keeping regional coordination and surveillance running.
Passengers may have noticed something at check in, since terminal power was affected, but that did not touch aircraft movements.
Given the week Belize has had with the power grid, this is worth noting. Redundancy exists in the places where failure is not an option, and on Sunday it worked exactly as designed.
