A reader asks: should Belize stop Carnival altogether?

A reader asks: should Belize stop Carnival altogether?

By Belize Live News Staff: This came into our inbox from a BLN reader over the weekend, and it deserves airing.

“If every year carnival fights happen, shooting happen, stabbing, why not completely STOP it! I’ve lived in Belize all my life and never been to a carnival why?? Too much negativity and stray way lick, people get hurt innocently why and what reason? It has to stop.”

The timing is not accidental. A man was stabbed to death on Pickstock Street in the early hours of Carnival morning.

The reader’s point is straightforward. If the same thing happens every year, at what stage does the country stop treating it as bad luck?

The counter argument is equally straightforward. Thousands of Belizeans come out, dance, and go home without incident. Carnival is culture, it is work for costume makers and bands and vendors, and shutting it down would take something real from people who did nothing wrong.

Somewhere between those two positions sits the question of what actually gets done about security.

So, BLN family, what do you say? Should Carnival stop, or should the country fix what surrounds it? Comment below.
