Three hurricanes at once in the Pacific, and we are in our own peak month

Three hurricanes at once in the Pacific, and we are in our own peak month

By Belize Live News Staff: Something rare is happening on the other side of the continent.

Three hurricanes are active in the Pacific simultaneously, the first time that has happened in 11 years. Lowell is the big one, a Category 4 south of Hawaii after briefly touching Category 5. Hawaii is under an emergency declaration for dangerous surf and heavy rain. Karina and Marie are weaker and farther out.

A strong El Niño is being credited for the unusually busy Pacific.

Now look closer to home.

Belize sits in the Atlantic basin, which runs on different drivers, and our season peaks right now. September is historically the most dangerous month for this country. Hattie in October 1961. Greta in September 1978. Iris in October 2001. Earl in August 2016.

So far the Atlantic has given us Dolly and Edouard, neither of which came near us. That is good fortune, not a pattern.

The rest of September and all of October still stand between us and the end of the season on November 30.

Is your hurricane kit actually ready, or is it something you will get to?
