Usher dismisses $1 million convention spending claim

Usher dismisses $1 million convention spending claim

By Belize Live News Staff: People’s United Party Chairman Henry Charles Usher has dismissed claims that as much as one million dollars was spent in connection with Sunday’s Belize City municipal convention.

Roughly 787 delegates voted at the ITVET compound to select the party’s mayoral candidate and ten councillor candidates for the March 2027 municipal elections.

Speculation over campaign spending emerged in the days that followed.

Usher scoffed at the estimate, saying he does not know how the figure was calculated and that there is no evidence to support it.

He acknowledged that conventions carry significant costs.

“There are advertising expenses. Advertising on Channel 5 is very expensive,” he said. “You have banners, you have workers, you have the logistics of the day in terms of bringing out the delegates, having people assist you on a day under your tent, greeters, etcetera.”

“Getting into politics is an expensive endeavor and you need resources to get it done.”

Asked directly about reports of at least a million dollars, Usher replied, “I think you guys are exaggerating.”

He did not provide an official estimate of total expenditure by candidates or their teams.
