By Belize Live News Staff: The last time Belize and Taiwan ran a women’s empowerment project, it reached more than 2,700 women across every district in the country.
Now they are doing it again, and this time young people are included.
The Belize Women and Youth MSMEs Development Project was signed on Tuesday, backed by three million US dollars from Taiwan.
Ambassador Amino Chi said the earlier project began in the aftermath of the covid pandemic to support those hardest hit and create pathways to economic recovery.
“We can see communities were rebuilt and many women had stepped into non traditional fields such as cell phone repair,” he said.
The new project will train participants in entrepreneurship and vocational skills, with a focus on tourism, indigenous handicraft and building industries.
Minister Francis Fonseca framed it as closing what he called one of the most consequential gender gaps in the economy.
Chi said he hopes the project helps Belizean women and youth discover their talent and continue changing the perception of women’s role in society.
